The inside story

Six thousand years of human history are waiting to be explored at Berlin’s Museum Island (also known as Museumsinsel) set on the River Spree. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999, it’s comprised of five imposing museums showcasing an enormous range of art, spanning from Ancient Egypt to 19th-century Europe.

Each museum offers up a different slice of history. The Altes Museums is the oldest (built in 1830) and holds mainly Greek and Roman antiquities. The Neues Museum is known for its prehistoric and Egyptian collection. The Alte Nationalgalerie focuses on the Romantic and Impressionists period, while the Bode Museum showcases works of late antique and Byzantine art. Finally, the star of the show is the Pergamon Museum, with its awe-inspiring architectural facades and gates from ancient worlds.

Of the many magnificent works you don’t want to miss the famed Pergamon Altar and Ishtar Gate of Babylon at the Pergamon, along with the legendary bust of the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti at the Neues Museum.
